History of Gatlinburg Tennessee

The Oglesby family, from South Carolina, became the first settlers in the area and they named it White Oaks Flats because of the widespread white oak trees in the area. 

There are numerous tales of how White Oak Flats became known as Gatlinburg. The most popular of those involves Radford Gatlin settling in the area in 1854. Gatlin opened the town’s 2nd general store which housed the area’s first post office in 1856. After this, the town’s name was changed to Gatlinburg.
